Translation and Interpreting Dilemmas Faced when Working in Court Settings

This JBCC- and ATA-approved webinar will enable interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC) to earn 2 hours of ethics continuing education credit and translators certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) to earn 2 continuing education points.

This is a 2-hour ethics course on ethical dilemmas that court interpreters may face in court settings, particularly dilemmas having to do with written translations, errors or omissions in the renditions of other interpreters, and the use of non-professional interpreters in court settings. This interactive webinar will aid licensed court interpreters in determining how to act when facing such ethical dilemmas.

The language of instruction will be English and the webinar will be language-neutral.

This webinar is intended mainly for court interpreters licensed by the Texas Judicial Branch Certification Commission who are seeking to fulfill their JBCC continuing education requirement, but will also be useful for interpreters preparing to take the JBCC licensing exam or the federal court interpreter certification exam and for translators seeking ATA continuing education credit. 

This event will be held online via Zoom. You will receive information on how to connect to the Zoom session a few days before the webinar.

In order to comply with JBCC attendance verification requirements and receive your certificate of participation, you must keep your computer or phone camera on throughout the webinar. Please do not register if you are not willing or able to comply with this requirement.

Participants licensed by JBCC will earn 2 ethics continuing education hours

Participants certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) will earn 2 continuing education points  (ATA approval pending)

About our presenter

Sandra Dejeux works as a freelance interpreter in the Houston, Texas, metro area. She has a master’s degree in Spanish Interpretation and Translation from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Campus and is a certified healthcare interpreter and a licensed court interpreter (master designation) for the State of Texas. She has served as president of the Houston Interpreters and Translators Association (HITA) and as HITA liaison to the Texas Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (TAJIT) Legislation Committee in 2016-2017, and she was a member of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) Bench and Bar Committee in 2019 and 2020.
